In 1997, renowned artist Anthony Waichulis opened the doors of his art studio in his hometown in Pennsylvania. It was this Atelier, The Waichulis Studio (TWS) that would be responsible for some of the most breathtaking Realist drawings and paintings of today. Works by Waichulis’ Apprentices have been celebrated worldwide. Their endeavors populate the walls of many of the most prestigious galleries throughout the US, appear regularly in top national publications, and receive numerous accolades and awards. In 2010, The Waichulis Studio was approached by a newly forming entity with aspirations for an educational effort on a global scale. This new entity, The Ani Art Academies, was the brainchild of Mr. Tim Reynolds, co-founder of a thriving Wall Street trading firm, passionate artist, patron of the arts, and founder of The Tim Reynolds Foundation. Tim's vision was to create a non-profit effort that would provide an intensive multi-year art skills education to aspiring artists around the world. He wanted to place special focus on those who may normally not have the opportunity to pursue a creative career, providing full scholarships and stipends to ensure each student can focus primarily on his or her education. Mr. Reynolds felt that placing some of the strongest artistic training into the hands of so many aspiring artists around the world can ultimately create an powerful generation of creatives capable of contributing exciting new ideas, sharing robust cultures, and pioneering new means of connection and communication through expression on scale not seen before. Tim decided on the name 'Ani' to represent this massive undertaking as it is a play on the Swahili word 'Andjani', meaning the "road" or the "path ahead." Soon after deciding to move forward with his plans, Mr. Reynolds learned of success of The Waichulis training system through the auspices of fellow artist/instructor Timothy W. Jahn. Anthony's logical approach to skill building coupled with his conscious effort to avoid the implementation of a specific aesthetic into his training system, offered a curriculum that would fit Mr. Reynolds’ intention to a 'T'. Armed with Reynolds’ vision and Waichulis training system, the Ani project began to display the first signs of life. In 2011, The Waichulis Studio merged with the Ani Art Academies project to form the domestic flagship of the Ani project, The Ani Art Academy Waichulis. Located right here in Northeast Pennsylvania, The Ani Art Academies Waichulis curriculum continues to focus on essential fundamentals of draftsmanship, properties of light, elements of perception, and various methods of painting without subscribing to any particular aesthetic. Through a comprehensive series of simple but challenging repetitive exercises, Ani Art Academies' Apprentices develop the ability to communicate with a vocabulary of confident marks, lines, values and colors. It is the Artist's particular employ of this highly adaptable visual vocabulary that will begin to reveal an artistic vision, and ultimately, a unique voice. 2012 saw the grand opening of the second Ani Art Academy, on the Caribbean island of Anguilla (Ani Art Academies Anguilla). This year also will welcome the third Academy in the Dominican Republic (Ani Art Academies Dominicana). Timothy W. Jahn, former apprentice of The Ani Art Academy Waichulis, is the first International Ani instructor at the academy in Anguilla. Edward Dillon, also hailing from Northeastern PA, will be taking the head instructor position in the Dominican Republic. Academies are also scheduled to open in Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Sri Lanka in the very near future.
