Don’t Buy That Bike

Bicycles from department stores look appealing, with flashy paint schemes and ultra-low pricing. But that’s all they have going for them. They are of very poor quality and we suggest that you reconsider any inclination to buy them. Here are six reasons why:

• Advice
As a specialty retailer, finding the bike that works for you is our job. We listen to your needs and, based on usage, we can recommend the best choices. We explain pros and cons and relate pertinent information about specific models. Our team has more than 70 years of experience helping customers.

• Sizing
Department store bikes come in one size. Every bike we sell comes in specific sizes, with up to six different options. We fit you properly to ensure comfort.

• Quality
Our bikes cost more, but the quality of the frame and parts far exceed that of a big-box bike. The level of assembly is far superior. Our bikes need less adjustment, ride smoother and quieter, are about 20% lighter, and will last about 10 years longer.

• Brands
Thirty years ago, Schwinn and Mongoose were high-quality bikes sold in specialty retail stores- equivalent now to Specialized and Trek. Since then, they are sold in big-box stores. The name remains, but the product is much different. Specialty retailers can easily recognize poor quality by their components. The consumer sees the price and the name and thinks it’s a good deal. Unfortunately, you get what you pay for.

• Service
We routinely repair bikes from these stores at an average cost of $35– equivalent to buying a car for $5,000, getting it repaired for $1,000, and still having a lemon. Big-box stores don’t offer repair services and can only replace the busted bike with another poorly assembled, barely functioning bike.

• Warranty
All of our bikes come with a lifetime warranty on the frame and one year on parts. Higher-end models warranty parts for five years. We offer free adjustments for the first three months and a full tune-up, ensuring that the bike will work well far into the future. It also encourages feedback from the customer. Rest assured, you’ll enjoy the ride, receive the health benefits, and continue the pleasure of riding your bike.
