“The Cave” is part of one of the most successful and long-standing businesses in the City of Pittston, the Pet Zone. Founded by William Pambianco, Sr., in 1985, it is one of the most unique pet stores in the area.
The Cave is actually a reptile zoo and education center. It was the idea of the founder’s son, William, Jr., and Jason Bartoli, and is currently the home of an array of snakes, alligators, and lizards– including the bearded variety and Gila monsters– as well as other exotic animals not found in other local pet stores. According to Bartoli, one of the advantages that the Pet Zone offers, through experimentation, is its own breed of exotic reptiles, resulting in unique colors and patterns not found in other reptile stores.
Some of the snakes and reptiles are venomous and may seem dangerous, but they are the stars of a great display that is conducted in a very safe environment. Patrons are educated about how these amazing animals survive in our ever-changing world. Not only do patrons get to see the reptiles, but they also get to touch some of them. It is a learning experience for all ages.
The Pambiancos and their fellow workers are experts in dealing with the exotic animals. For example, William, Jr., has always had an interest in reptiles and dragons since he was a young boy, and his interest led to the creation of The Cave. The entranceway creates the effect of entering a realistic habitat for these animals, including vines, rocks, and shelters for the animals, and a water pool and waterfall for the alligators.
In addition, there are also exotic fish, birds, turtles, and ferrets and a new coral exhibit on the main floor of the Pet Zone. There is also a variety of cat and dog food available, but you won’t hear a meow or a bark in this pet store.
If you want to visit The Cave, it is open every Friday and Saturday, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. On each of those days, there are special reptile shows. Patrons should keep an eye out for the uncaged, bearded dragon that roams freely throughout the cave. There are also live alligator and other animal feedings during the 5:00 show on Saturdays.
If you would like to socialize with some of the exotic reptiles and snakes, group rates for parties are also available.
The Pet Zone is located at 20 West Oak Street, in Pittston. For additional information, call (570) 655-3260 or visit www.zonepets.com/thecave. The Pet Zone is also on FacebookTM.
