The nation’s first senior center, as we know it today, opened in 1943 in New York City to provide educational and recreational activities, as well as case management services, to help the elderly maintain their independence. Fast forward 68 years, and though the purpose basically hasn’t changed, the face of today’s centers is definitely receiving cosmetic surgery, even here in the Wyoming Valley. |

 The new Irem Shrine Center and Country Club, in Dallas, opened in May 2009, offering many services to the community. The Irem Shrine, originally founded in 1895 in Wilkes-Barre, established the original clubhouse and golf course in 1923, acquiring three neighboring farms– the Derr Estate, Watkins Farm, and later the Honeywell Farm. Amenities of the property included one of the largest pavilions in Northeast Pennsylvania, an RV park, Gun Club, golf course and restaurant. The Shriners are a branch of Freemasonry, known for their colorful parades and circuses and most especially for their official philanthropy: the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
