Q: I’m currently unemployd and at a crossroads in my professional life-- should I obtain additional education that will help me more n the near future or settle now? Are there any hot career programs that will ensure my qualification for in-demand jobs?

A: Despite the slow economic recovery, nursing and related health care occupations are still projected as having the largest number of job openings, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and will continue to be that way for the future. At LCCC, we offer associate degrees in nursing, dental assisting or dental hygiene, respitory therapy, surgical technology, medical assisteing and medical reimbursement and coding.

For adult students who have prior work experience in an office setting, earning a one-year certificate in medical reimbursement or medical assisting provides a speedier path to immediate employment.

The Health Information Management course of study offers three, two-year degrees and three certificates for those looking to secure  a job in a Medical Office. The degrees are Medical Office Specialist Associate Degree in Applied Science, Medical Reimbursement and Coding Specialist Associate Degree in Applied Science, and Medical Transcription Specialist Associate   Degree in Applied Science.

The three certificate programs, which typically can be completed in two semesters, include: Medical Office Specialist Certificate, Medical Reimbursement and Coding Specialist Certificate, and Medical Transcription Specialist Certificate.

If an individual has work experience but no formal education beyond high school, I recommend getting a highly-marketable certificate or associate degree in technology or allied health to increase the chances of re-employment in the job market.

LCCC’s associate degrees in Accounting and Computer Information Technology provide good entry-level prospects with the potential for advancement with further education.

Court-Reporting/Captioning is a highly-specialist profession that can be completed in two years. It has excellent income potential and is one of the few occupations that has a shortage of qualified applicants. Another winner is Culinary Arts because everyone has to eat, even in a recession. Our certificate programs in truck driving, nurse aide, and table games are popular programs because they provide immediate employment with only a short (one to three months) period of training.
