As I walked through the door of Elements of Style in Kingston, I was immediately greeted by a smiling, enthusiastic, well-dressed woman. You see, it's proprietor Bonnie Shwom's goal to make sure that everyone who comes into her shop is comfortable and knows that she cares about them.
And she truly does care. She's developed close friendships and tight bonds with many of her customers. When life gets a little rough, Bonnie is there to offer support, comfort, and even a shoulder. She sends thoughtful cards and attends funerals.
Even the way she runs her business shows how incredibly special she is. All clothing is consigned at 50/50. If an item isn't purchased within 60 days, it is donated for Hands for Hope, which benefits economically disadvantaged people.
As I entered the consignment shop, I was impressed by the ambient lighting the gold chandelier cast. The dressing rooms decorated in beautifully patterned wallpaper, which shows that Elements of Style was put together with great care, both in terms of atmosphere and customer service.
As a man who doesn't frequently shop for clothing, the lush, comfortable chair by the front door impressed me. Bonnie said it's reserved for the less-interested male shopping companions.
While Bonnie took me on a tour of the shop and the clothing in stock, my eyes were instantly drawn to a colorful multiplicity of beautifully crafted designer garments and accessories, like those I have come to expect to see on my trips to New York City.
She proudly showed me a sampling of the designer brands she carries-pristine Louie Vuitton bags and a $1,000 pair of Jimi Choo boots priced well below what one would expect to pay for such quality items.
It is Bonnie's belief that fashion should be affordable; just because a woman isn't affluent doesn't mean that she can't have a stylish wardrobe.
"I love Elements of Style because I can get high fashion clothing for a fraction of the cost," said customer Kimberly Wilczynski. "I can purchase several high-end name brand items for a price that I couldn't buy one item for at the boutique."
