Profiles In Business Excellence: Gramercy Ballroom and Restaurant

Jenna Hawley

The family behind Gramercy Ballroom and Restaurant has been helping other families in the Wyoming Valley commemorate events for more than 70 years. Michael Augello, along with his wife, Mary Pat, now owns and runs the business founded by his grandparents, Giuseppi and Gustina Augello. In the '40s, Gramercy started as a pizza tavern, later adding a nightclub. After the World War, the Augellos converted it to a ballroom and restaurant to accommodate the surge of weddings, as soldiers were returning home and getting married.
The business, located on Main Street in Pittston, has been owned and run by the Augellos for the last seven decades. Michael's parents, Michael and Susan, have had a big part in the business, along with the senior Michael's brother, Sam, and his wife, Marcella. Michael's father still comes into the restaurant to help out every day. Michael has been there most his life as well.
"My parents handed me a broom when I was eleven," Michael laughed. "I've been here ever since."
Gramercy is a restaurant that is open six days a week, from 11 a.m.-11 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 5 p.m.-11 p.m. on Saturday. Michael describes the restaurant as "casual, with affordable dishes and great value." The menu is mostly Italian, offering what Michael says is "the best pasta in the Wyoming Valley," but also includes steaks and seafood as well. Gramercy also features a full bar and two private dining rooms, the Justinian and Carnation Rooms.
Crystal chandeliers adorn the many banquet halls, adding an elegant, sophisticated touch to the spacious rooms. Gramercy hosts all types of events, including weddings, receptions, showers, reunions, anniversaries, funeral gatherings, birthday parties, business meetings, and rehearsal dinners. Conveniently, all arrangements are taken care of on-site, including food, decorations, flowers, and cakes. Michael observed that due to Gramercy's longevity in the Valley, they have often celebrated both a wedding and a 50th anniversary party with a couple.     He enjoys dealing with couples who are experiencing some of the happiest times in their lives.
"Just hope the happy times last," Michael chuckled.
Michael hopes that customers will say that Gramercy offers great food and great service. Gramercy strives to help provide memorable occasions for all the important times in life. Visit its website at www.gramercyballroom.com.
