Geisinger Health System is an integrated health services organization, nationally recognized and even cited by President Barack Obama for its innovative use of the electronic health record and the development and implementation of innovative care models. The system serves more than 2.6 million residents throughout Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania.

Locally, Geisinger manages 14 primary care offices, from Tunkhannock to Hazleton, Dallas to Mt. Pocono, and everywhere in-between. Family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatric doctors work with a dedicated team of nurses and office staff to provide preventive care to families all over the community. Geisinger’s primary care providers can also help patients manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or asthma.
Also in Northeastern Pennsylvania, the health system operates a state-of-the-art hospital at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center (GWV), in Plains Township. The Medical Center also includes campuses throughout the area such as the Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre (GSWB) Regional Ambulatory Campus and a nearby outpatient specialty clinic.
Geisinger offers a full spectrum of care for residents in Northeastern Pennsylvania. From outpatient specialty services to the most complex medical and surgical cases, the healthcare professionals here offer the high- quality care patients and families expect. There is no need to travel outside the area for the most advanced care.
GWV is home to the region’s most advanced medical services, including a comprehensive heart hospital, a high-end cancer center, a brain and spine tumor institute, an accredited chest pain center, a transplant program, surgical procedures in many specialties, a new emergency department, the county’s only trauma center, and more.
Geisinger’s ProvenCare initiative has made headlines across the nation with its “warranty” program for heart surgery and several other procedures.
This summer, construction will begin on a new Women’s and Children’s wing at GWV. The expansion will bring the only neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to Luzerne County, advanced labor and delivery capabilities, and private rooms designed to meet the unique healthcare needs of women.
GSWB offers same-day surgery using the latest minimally invasive techniques in a variety of specialties. It boasts inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, a sleep disorders center, pain therapy, and podiatry services.
GSWB also features unique adult and pediatric urgent care centers, which families can utilize as a less expensive, faster avenue to seek treatment for non-emergencies as an alternative to the emergency room. Geisinger’s urgent care specialists are equipped to handle a variety of urgent medical cases, such as allergies, asthma, colds or the flu, minor cuts and burns, nausea, pink eye, sprains, stitches, earaches, and sore throats.
One of the newest additions at GSWB is a pre-surgery center, where surgical patients can receive all required tests before an upcoming surgery. Whether the surgery will be performed at GWV or GSWB, the pre-surgery test results will be automatically forwarded to your surgeon using Geisinger’s robust electronic health records system.
Geisinger recognizes the importance of being a good corporate citizen and is involved with many community organizations such as the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce and the South Wilkes-Barre Business Alliance. The system also has strong partnerships with the local chapters of many health associations, including the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, and March of Dimes.
