“Hot oven on wheels” is one way to describe the dune buggy Jim Januzzi delivered pizza with in the 1970s. The business was one of the first to provide the region with home delivery.
Prior to Januzzi’s, Jim worked in a pizzeria but decided, with his wife, to open their own small storefront business. Januzzi’s opened its doors on Academy Street in 1973 with only three employees: Jim, wife Sandi, and his younger brother, Karl.
This past July, the business relocated from Academy St. to Downtown Wilkes-Barre. The new location includes a large dining area and convenient proximity to the movie theater, Movies14. General Manager Gary Isaac said since the move, the business experienced an increase in customers.
“I’ve been concentrating on the dining room area, but we still have our pick ups and deliveries,” Gary said. “Before moving, we didn’t do as much dining room business at Academy Street.”
The pizzeria downtown currently employs more than 25 local residents, many who have been with the company for more than two decades. Three independently owned franchises are located in the Back Mountain, Mountaintop, and Wyoming.
The new downtown location offers specials in conjunction with the movie theater, such as a movie combo for $21.95, including two movie tickets, one medium-size pizza with one topping, and two sodas. Januzzi’s also offers its customers one-hour parking validation from the parking lot across the street.
Januzzi’s specialty pizzas include “Hawaiian,” with Canadian bacon, pineapple, and extra cheese; the “Healthy Delight,” with tomatoes, broccoli, and fresh garlic, but no cheese. Other items on the menu include a variety of wraps, wings, subs, soups, and salads.
Januzzi’s is open Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m.-12:30 a.m., and Sundays noon-11 p.m. Its service area for deliveries include Wilkes-Barre, Hanover, Ashley, Nanticoke, Plymouth, and Plains Township.
The dune buggy has retired since its debut in the 1970s but has become Januzzi’s signature logo. For more information, visit
