“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broad concerns of all humanity.”– Martin Luther King, Jr.
The holidays are a communal series of events that create and enhance bonds between family and friends, heightening our generosity toward those in need.
As we become immersed in the hustle and bustle of preparing for gift giving and celebration this season, let us not do so without consideration for the 9% of our fellow Americans who are out of work or who find themselves in dire need of food and shelter.
Consider dropping a few coins in the traditional red kettles or donate to a local charity or homeless shelter. Valley Santa is always grateful for the humanity of others.
Is money tight this year? Consider donating a few hours to a local soup kitchen or food pantry. After all, many hands make light work.
It is easy to overlook that there are those among us who, although might otherwise have been celebrating as we are, have little or nothing this year. Before we sit down to traditional feasts or attend lavish parties and events, take the time to consider those affected by recent flooding from Hurricanes Irene and Lee. There are local food and clothing drives organized specifically for flood victims in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Heating costs skyrocket during the winter months, eliciting anxiety and depression in the best of situations. Be grateful for home and hearth by being mindful that our neighbors may not be as fortunate.
It is our great pleasure to present our winter issue– we hope you will be inspired.
Happy holidays. May the New Year bring peace and prosperity to you, your family, and our community.
