Michael Dorbad, of Exeter, received his degree from King’s College in May, at the age of 19, a time when most students are relieved to have finished the dreaded freshman year or are exploring their career interests.

Dorbad graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Biology and is beginning the next step in his goal of becoming a doctor. Prior to receiving his King’s degree, Dorbad was accepted into the medical program at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

“While attending Wyoming Area, I knew I wanted to have a career in the sciences,” he said. “I chose medicine over research because of the greater person-to-person involvement.

I completed many advanced placement and college classes while at Wyoming Area. King’s was great in allowing me to develop an unconventional class schedule, so I was able to earn my bachelor’s degree in just two years.”

King’s College’s reputation as an outstanding liberal arts college and its strong science program attracted Dorbad, as well as a full-tuition Presidential Scholarship.

“The first year was difficult. I was taking junior-level courses while trying to adjust to college life and studying for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT),” he said. “But the faculty members were always there to assist me. King’s not only met my expectations, but surpassed them.”

Dorbad’s success in the classroom was accompanied by an array of extracurricular activities. He volunteered at the Care and Concern Medical Clinic, observed at local hospitals, and participated in research studies with King’s faculty members.

On campus, he was a peer tutor to King’s students and participated in a student outreach program at Wyoming Valley West High School. He was president of the Biology Club and the Commuter Life Association, founded the Table Tennis Club, and participated in a number of intramural sports programs.

While eager to begin the next chapter of his life, Dorbad has taken time to reflect.

“King’s has been good to me. I’m leaving with happy memories and excitement for the road ahead,” he said. “However, there is sadness, too, leaving what has been like family to me for the last two years. King’s will always have a special place in my heart.”
