When you walk into Phoenix Rehabilitation and Health Services in Kingston, the bright, warm sunlight streaming in is the first indication that this is not your run-of-the-mill physical therapy office.
"The light that comes in is a very nice effect," said Director Michael Schlude, the facility's physical therapist. "I've worked in many clinics where physical therapy is delegated to the basement of the facilities. This is a nice little area that's inviting to everybody."
Kingston's Phoenix Rehabilitation is a small, intimate center, staffed by Michael and Jennifer Urganus, a certified massage therapist. Michael, the director of the facility since December 2008, entered the field as a way to improve the lives of people affected by pain or injury.
"I like helping people," he said. "I like seeing progress, and I like the daily interaction with people. It can be fun at times."
Phoenix Rehabilitation offers physical therapy, work conditioning, industrial rehabilitation, vestibular rehabilitation, and massage therapy. Patients' ages range from 15 to 75, all seeking relief from injury and everyday aches and pains. Michael also helps his patients with post-surgery recovery.
While there are other small, physical rehabilitation clinics in the area, Michael believes that Phoenix Rehabilitation's focus on one-on-one care sets it apart from the rest. Working with the same physical therapist throughout the duration of treatment allows patients to feel more comfortable and develop stronger trust.
"There is no guessing which therapist you are going to see when you come in," he said. "Because it's only me, I have a close relationship with all my patients."
The center also meets the needs of its patients by making scheduling as easy as possible. To complement busy schedules, early-morning and evening hours are available and can be expanded if necessary.
Michael attributes the success of the practice to its adherence to the holistic model.
"We treat each patient as a person, not necessarily as a diagnosis," he said. "And, we make sure all of their needs are met." For more information, visit www.phoenixrehab.com.
