Yoga changed her life.
Sandy Seyler once worked as a billing accountant, where feeling stressed was part of her daily routine. She sought relief by attending yoga classes. "I would run after work to go take yoga," she said.
Sandy's interest in yoga grew with every lesson, and she eventually began substituting for the instructor from time to time. She later attended an Ashram in Virginia to learn yoga from a Himalayan master, Swami Satchidananda.
"He taught us that, to be a good teacher and to help others feel better about themselves, you need to take care of and be truthful to yourself- having peace and love radiate from you," she said.
Sandy has taught yoga full time for 10 years. She presently teaches Hatha yoga at the House of Nutrition in Luzerne and Misericordia University in Dallas. In Hatha yoga, "ha" means "sun" and "tha" means "moon." Classes are $10 each or 6 for $50.
Her multi-level classes give students the opportunity to walk in without ever doing a yoga pose, and on from there, working at their own level.
In addition to yoga classes, Sandy also teaches meditation and is a Reiki master. During her meditation classes, she follows five principles: washing, stretching, relaxing, breathing, and meditation. She provides a mantra while her students meditate. "A mantra is a short phrase to help the mind have something to do without making it think," Sandy said.
As a Reiki master, Sandy focuses on energy as a way to heal. Reiki is a hands-on, energy- healing process developed in Japan. "It's the physics; we're working the person's energy. We are going to the source, to work with the person's energy instead of the outer shell," she said.
For several years, Sandy has practiced Reiki at Camp Braveheart, an annual weekend devoted to self-empowerment for cancer survivors.
"They are such incredible people, with strength and hope. To be able in some small way to offer a little bit of comfort is life changing. It's an experience that's worth every moment," she said.
Sandy is also a lecturer for the Survivors program at Geisinger Cancer Center in Wilkes-Barre. For a list of Sandy Seyler's classes, visit www.sandyseyler.com.
